I gotta be honest, between trying to stick to my New Year’s resolution (doing more exercise – ugh), constantly fretting about whether or not I’m actually going to get into university, getting through my summer reading list, dealing with the various scandals and dramas that seem to be forever going on in my social circle and enjoying the wonders of daytime television, I haven’t been thinking about music a lot lately.
Oh, sure, I still listen to music. I listen to Lady Gaga while I’m at the gym, I listen to Fall Out Boy on the bus and at almost every party I go to I’m subjected to Ke$ha – usually multiple times in one night. But I haven’t been trying much of anything new, unusual or exciting lately. I’m stuck in a bit of a music rut.
When I listen to music lately it’s never anything new. Since the start of the year I’ve been going through all my old playlists and remembering when I put them together. There’s the playlist from my birthday party last year that’s full of Peaches, Pendulum and The Medic Droid; there’s the playlist from after a rather unpleasant break-up, featuring habitually miserable bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes, as well as I Hate Everything by The Suicide Machines.
Well, I’m sick of this stuff now. It’s the start of a new year and a new decade, and so I belatedly resolve to make it the start of a change in my taste in music as well. After all, if it’s going to be a good year, it needs a good soundtrack.
